Description

The discovery of intense red and pink spinels in the Mahenge District of Tanzania in 2007 hit the gem world by storm and thrust Spinel into the limelight. The first stone found was in a farmers field - workers found a giant Spinel crystal weighing 114 Pounds. This Mahenge Spinel crystal displayed the gorgeous vibrant pink and red color that is now famous from Mahenge Spinel. The crystal was full of inclusions and had to be “knocked” into smaller sized pieces. This began a love affair in the gem world with this incredibly rare and exciting stone, thrusting Spinel center stage. Most of the Mahenge deposit is mined out now but occasionally some nice pieces are found such as this one.

Well, they don't come any better than this. Mahenge Spinels are renowned for their incredible colors- a sumptuous, heady mixture of reds and pinks and this stone is a testament to why they are so coveted. Flawless, lustrous and full of brilliance. Classic top Mahenge material. Rare in flawless crystals like this.
