Fancy Sapphire FAQ’s

Fancy Sapphire is a varietal term that describes all colors of Sapphire except blue. Blue Sapphires are simply called “Sapphires” all other colors are “Fancy Sapphires”. Many people don’t realize that there are over 40 different colors of Fancy Sapphire including the coveted Padparadscha orange-pinks and the exquisite canary yellows.

Canary Yellow Sapphires are intense yellow with no orange modifier. They closely resemble canary Diamonds and are often used as a less expensive option. The finest Canary Yellow Sapphires are found in Garbatulla in Kenya and also in Sri Lanka (formerly Ceylon). Madagascar also produces some fine material. The cause of color in Yellow Sapphires is chiefly the trace element iron. The more iron, the deeper, more intense the color.

The finest blues are the most expensive Sapphires. Whilst blue Sapphire can also be very inexpensive in lower grades, in the top grades it is very rare and consequently commands a high price. Padparadscha sapphires, which are a coveted orange-pink color are also highly prized, rare and hence expensive.
